Fiji’s Bold Move Against Plastic Pollution: The TrashBoom Initiative

A local initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste in Fiji’s waterways has recently gained momentum with the Nasinu Town Council joining the effort. The initiative, highlighted by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to deploy TrashBoom systems at critical sites, seeks to prevent solid waste, particularly plastic, from entering the ocean.

The TrashBoom is a specially designed waste interception device that has shown effectiveness in capturing plastic waste. Notably, the initiative has accomplished three installations, including TB001 at Nadera, TB002 at the Water Authority Raw Water Catchment in Savura Cascade, and TB003 at Suva’s Nubukalou Creek. The Director of TrashBoom Pacific, Wayne Fuakilau, emphasized the strategic partnership with Nasinu Town Council as a significant advancement in their small and medium enterprise-led model for managing plastic waste within rivers.

Fuakilau noted that the collaboration has been a result of several months of discussions with key stakeholders since launching the initiative with the UNDP Pacific’s Accelerator Lab in 2023. He acknowledged support from the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change (MECC), which has been crucial in shaping their approach to waste interception.

The impacts of the TrashBoom system are already noticeable; in just the first week of April, it intercepted over 60 kilograms of solid waste, primarily plastic bottles, at Nubukalou Creek. Fuakilau advocated for a tailored approach, stressing the need to understand the unique behaviors of rivers in varying conditions to enhance project efficacy, stating, “It’s not a one size fits all.”

The effort is not only about waste collection but also involves conducting brand audits and gathering data on the types of waste collected. This analysis will aid in informing necessary upstream awareness and waste management practices. Furthermore, the initiative has engaged with global and local brands to support its mission, with announcements expected soon.

As momentum builds, TrashBoom Pacific plans to replicate its model in other municipalities, promoting environmental innovation alongside practical waste management strategies and supporting community development.

Fiji’s proactive stance on tackling plastic pollution through initiatives like TrashBoom underscores a growing collaborative spirit, emphasizing community involvement in creating a cleaner, more sustainable environment. This dedication offers hope for more effective waste management solutions, inspiring environmental stewardship among communities across Fiji.
