Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has officially announced the government’s plan to develop a National Peacekeeping Strategy. This strategy aims to redefine Fiji’s involvement in international peacekeeping operations, evolving it to meet modern-day challenges.

Tikoduadua, drawing on his own experiences as a former peacekeeper, acknowledged the significant sacrifices made by over 50,000 Fijians who have served in peacekeeping roles since 1978. He emphasized that while their names may not headline history, their contributions resonate deeply within the moral framework of the nation, stating, “They died not for conquest, but for calm.”

During a recent address to Parliament, Tikoduadua highlighted the necessity of reassessing Fiji’s peacekeeping commitments, noting the changing nature of conflict today. Modern peacekeepers increasingly confront complex threats, including cyber attacks and the use of weaponized drones. The minister remarked, “The world we live in today is not the world of 1978. Conflict has changed.”

The National Peacekeeping Strategy is designed to establish clear criteria for mission selection, articulate success beyond military accomplishments, ensure standardized training for personnel, and provide support for families and reintegration of veterans. Tikoduadua conveyed a thoughtful approach to peacekeeping, raising essential questions on aligning such missions with national interests and values.

This initiative is not seen as a retreat from international responsibilities but rather as a commitment to ensure that Fiji’s peacekeeping roles are strategically aligned with its core interests. Tikoduadua’s proactive engagement reflects a hopeful narrative for Fijian peacekeepers, as the strategy promises to enhance their effectiveness and support within the global arena.

The sentiment surrounding Fiji’s peacekeeping efforts indicates a forward-looking approach, promoting adaptability while reinforcing the critical importance of these missions in fostering global stability and peace. Such steps not only honor the legacy of Fijian peacekeepers but also enhance the country’s position and influence in international peacekeeping frameworks, ultimately fostering a safer world.
