The Fijian authorities are taking decisive steps to tackle the proliferation of marijuana farming through a proposed use of chemicals for eradication. Assistant Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga shared these details while presenting the Fiji Police Force’s 2020-2021 annual report to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence. He explained that marijuana plants have an alarming ability to regenerate after being uprooted, necessitating an effective eradication method.

The police are collaborating with the New Zealand Police to explore the use of specific chemicals post-eradication to prevent any germination of the plants in the future. ACP Lutunauga assured that these chemicals would be selected with care to ensure they do not harm the local ecological systems.

Current operations on Kadavu reflect the ongoing commitment of the Fiji Police Force, with multiple teams deployed to eliminate marijuana farms. The initiative is part of a broader Operation Sasamaki, which has been proactive in identifying and destroying illegal cultivation. In the Northern Division, officers have already completed several waves of eradication efforts.

Regarding the growing calls for marijuana to be used for medicinal purposes, ACP Lutunauga emphasized the police force’s role in enforcing laws rather than making policy decisions, indicating that such discussions are the domain of the politicians and government.

This approach aligns with recent efforts highlighted by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, whose firm stance against marijuana cultivation focuses on preventing the community from normalizing drug use. These operations not only seek to eradicate illicit farming but also emphasize the importance of community involvement in tackling drug-related issues.

Positive outcomes are anticipated from these law enforcement actions, fostering hope for a healthier community and a future where drug cultivation does not take root in Fiji’s cultural fabric. This collaborative fight against illegal drugs aims to create a safer environment for all Fijians, showcasing the determination of both law enforcement and community members in combating the drug challenge.
