The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Fiji is stepping up its environmental initiatives with a new allocation of $100,000 dedicated to the installation of Trashboom equipment in three litter hotspots along the Suva-Nausori corridor and Nadi. Environment and Climate Change Minister Mosese Bulitavu announced these plans during a parliamentary session, highlighting the success of prior installations like the one at Nubukalou Creek, where over 612kg of waste has already been collected since the equipment’s installation in February.

Trashbooms serve as floating barriers designed to intercept solid waste before it can reach the ocean, playing a crucial role in maintaining the health of Fiji’s waterways. Minister Bulitavu emphasized that the upcoming installations will expand the initiative and further address the ongoing challenge of littering in these key areas.

In addition to the Trashboom rollout, $48,000 has been earmarked for enforcement of the Litter Act to tackle illegal dumping and littering more effectively. This focused effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance community engagement and awareness regarding responsible waste disposal practices, encouraging better civic responsibility among Fijians.

On the international front, Fiji is preparing to host the 6th Asia-Pacific Environment Ministers Forum (AP6) for the first time in a Pacific Island country, with an allocation of $146,000 from the government and additional support from Australia. This significant event will provide Fiji with a platform to influence high-level discussions on climate and environmental issues, showcasing its commitment to being a leader in sustainability within the region.

Moreover, the Ministry is working towards ratifying key international conventions focusing on hazardous waste and toxic chemicals, demonstrating ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental governance. An allocation of $11,500 is set aside in the 2025-2026 National Budget for this initiative.

These combined efforts reflect a hopeful and proactive commitment to environmental stewardship, emphasizing community cooperation and innovative solutions to enhance waste management and combat pollution in Fiji. As these initiatives gain momentum, they signal a positive outlook for the nation’s environmental future, inspiring a greater sense of responsibility among citizens to protect and preserve Fiji’s natural beauty.
