Fiji is making a significant stride into the digital economy with the introduction of its National E-Commerce Strategy 2025-2029. This initiative signals a critical shift for the country’s businesses and entrepreneurs, as it aims to align Fiji with the booming global e-commerce sector, which is expanding at an impressive annual rate of 8.5 percent.
Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, underscored the immediate need for Fiji to embrace this digital evolution. He stated, “We must embrace, adapt, and lead in this new digital era,” emphasizing that the strategy’s goal is to ensure all Fijian entrepreneurs, regardless of their geographical location, can access worldwide markets through digital commerce. This enhanced access is anticipated to empower local businesses across various industries, including tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing.
Ali acknowledged the challenges that accompany these opportunities, noting that significant obstacles remain, such as the necessity for more accessible digital payment systems and enhanced logistics—all vital for nurturing a robust e-commerce environment. The strategy will address the issues faced by many micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), including the high costs associated with online payment solutions. To tackle this, collaborative efforts with financial institutions are being initiated to upgrade the national payment system.
Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has stressed the importance of fostering a digital trading landscape where Fijian products can thrive globally. He painted a picture of economic empowerment that includes everyone from rural farmers to urban tech innovators, who should all be positioned to thrive in the digital economy.
The framework for the strategy includes the establishment of a dedicated National E-Commerce Committee responsible for coordinating efforts, tracking progress, and implementing the necessary reforms outlined in the plan. With a comprehensive roadmap that details timelines and performance indicators, the government is dedicated to realizing this transformative vision.
The potential benefits of this e-commerce initiative fill many with optimism. As Fiji enhances its digital infrastructure and fosters industry partnerships, the nation stands to benefit significantly from opportunities in global e-commerce. The push toward better digital literacy and logistics is likely to encourage greater participation from local entrepreneurs, ultimately enriching the economy and improving the lives of Fijians.
Fiji’s National E-Commerce Strategy not only represents a significant commitment to embracing the digital age but also positions the country as a promising digital trade hub in the region. With these efforts, Fiji is paving the way towards a resilient and inclusive economic future.
