Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Biman Prasad has drawn attention to the pressing infrastructure deficit facing Fiji during the National Budget consultations held in Lautoka. Prasad stated, “We have a big infrastructure deficit in this country,” specifically highlighting the urgent need for investment in health, road networks, water, and sewage systems. The estimated expenditure required to address these critical issues is around $8 billion.

In a proactive approach, the government is set to implement several plans aimed at infrastructure improvements over the next two years. Part of this initiative includes enhancing health services and developing medical tourism. To address concerns of potential tourists regarding health facilities, negotiations are underway for upgrades to the Ba and Lautoka hospitals.

Additionally, Prasad confirmed plans in collaboration with the Indian government to establish a specialized hospital in Suva, which will involve an investment of nearly $200 million. Featuring 50 beds designated for heart treatment and oncology, this new facility is expected to significantly improve healthcare services, thereby boosting the medical tourism sector.

The government is also focusing on the blossoming business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, where Fiji has emerged as the 10th most preferred destination. However, the challenge remains due to a shortage of adequate space and buildings. In response, the previous budget included incentives aimed at spurring further investment in this area, alongside reduced duties on prefabricated materials to facilitate development.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to stimulate economic growth, as indicated by recent announcements regarding over $1 billion in ongoing infrastructure projects, coupled with an optimistic economic growth forecast of up to 4% driven by positive trends in tourism and local investments.

The overarching narrative is one of resilience and potential, with the government’s strategic focus on infrastructure and healthcare promising to usher in significant improvements in the quality of life for Fijians, along with broader economic benefits. The commitment to building a better future reflects a hopeful vision for the nation’s progress.
