The Fijian government has made a significant commitment to public health by allocating $10 million in the 2025–2026 national budget to expand the Free Medical Scheme aimed at supporting vulnerable communities. This initiative is designed to improve healthcare access for low-income earners, social welfare pensioners, and chronic dialysis patients, in collaboration with more than 64 private healthcare providers, including doctors, dentists, and laboratories.

Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa emphasized the importance of this scheme, particularly as the budget also enhances financial support for kidney dialysis, increasing subsidies to $4.7 million. Additionally, the government has allocated $3.9 million as an operating grant to the Sai Prema Hospital, which specializes in life-saving cardiac surgeries for children, showcasing the administration’s commitment to investing in essential medical services.

Tragically, over 80% of premature deaths in Fiji are attributed to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In response, the Ministry of Health’s Wellness Division has been granted $1.9 million to support prevention programs across schools, villages, workplaces, and communities. This holistic approach goes beyond treatment, aiming to modify the lifestyle and environmental factors contributing to such health issues.

The overall budget for the Ministry of Health amounts to a substantial $465.6 million, reflecting the government’s ongoing effort to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services. Previous discussions highlighted a planned increase in funding for health facilities aimed at addressing the alarming rise of NCDs and promoting public health initiatives.

Overall, these measures and investments signify a proactive and hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s healthcare system. By focusing on accessible medical services, preventive health initiatives, and infrastructure improvements, the nation is optimistically paving the way for better health outcomes and a healthier future for all its citizens.
