The Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, has confirmed that an investigation into the safety of beverages consumed by tourists in Fiji is still underway, with one test result yet to come in. Initial assessments carried out by Fiji Police forensic teams alongside independent laboratories in New Zealand have found no harmful substances in the drinks in question.
Gavoka remarked, “There’s one particular case that needs to be verified, and we are taking steps to have that done in New Zealand.” He refrained from sharing personal information about the individual involved, highlighting the importance of maintaining privacy.
The Minister emphasized that Fiji maintains high standards of food and beverage safety, with many local hotels accredited under internationally recognized systems. He acknowledged that while some nations have issued advisories regarding drink safety for travelers, the hospitality industry in Fiji is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of its visitors.
This investigation follows a serious incident last December when seven tourists were hospitalized after consuming drinks at a local resort, prompting a comprehensive review to reinforce the safety of Fiji’s tourism offerings. Gavoka previously noted the absence of methanol or other illegal substances in the drinks, which is crucial for maintaining traveler confidence in Fiji as a safe destination.
Fiji’s ongoing commitment to transparency and safety underscores its dedication to providing a reliable and welcoming experience for tourists. This proactive approach in addressing safety concerns is expected to foster a hopeful future for the tourism sector, helping to rebuild trust with international visitors keen to explore the beautiful islands. The thorough investigation and swift response reflect positively on Fiji’s commitment to visitor security.
