A former officer with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Fiji, Losevati Muailasekula Cokanasiga, has been charged with bribery by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Cokanasiga appeared in the Nasinu Magistrates Court this week, facing allegations that she accepted a total of $11,117.28 from Ponipate Sevou between May 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022. The charges specify that this amount was received as a reward for actions performed in her role as a public servant.
FICAC’s Junior State Counsel, Lanieta More, confirmed that the initial phase of disclosures has been provided to the defendant. Following the court session, Resident Magistrate Savou granted Cokanasiga a non-cash bail of $1,000, but imposed strict conditions on her release. These conditions include a prohibition against re-offending, restrictions on interacting with prosecution witnesses, and the requirement to surrender all travel documents. Additionally, she must report monthly to the FICAC office, starting on May 9, 2025, with the next court date set for May 14.
This incident contributes to a broader context of efforts within Fiji to address corruption in public service roles, further highlighted by similar previous cases like that of Samuela Tuibeqa, a former employee of the Ministry of Health, who faced charges for fraudulently claiming financial advantages. Cases such as these underscore the importance of ethical standards and accountability in government operations, thereby reinforcing public trust in vital institutions.
As the legal processes unfold, there is a hopeful sentiment that these actions reflect a commitment to transparency and integrity in public service, paving the way for a more accountable future.
