The Fijian government has allocated $1,350,000 to the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) to support the upcoming Pacific Mini Games, which will be held in Palau from June 29 to July 9. This funding, disclosed by Sports Commission executive chair Peter Mazey, accounts for 52% of the total costs associated with the event.
Mazey revealed that this financial support has been in place since October of last year. Despite this significant contribution, sporting organizations, including Athletics Fiji, are asking for additional funds from the public and local businesses to help cover the remaining expenses for athletes’ participation, which requires $3,000 from each athlete.
In light of ongoing discussions, Mazey plans to meet with FASANOC president Cathy Wong to explore ways to reduce the financial burden on athletes. While acknowledging the generous support from the government, which exceeds historical contributions, he emphasized the need for a reassessment of the contribution required from athletes.
Additionally, the National Sports Commission has allocated funds for various sporting organizations to facilitate preparation for the Mini Games. Past reports highlighted that Team Fiji needs approximately $3.5 million to send around 186 athletes and officials, with the total cost for each athlete exceeding $15,500.
The current financial challenges reflect broader patterns seen throughout Fiji’s sports community, where federations are working tirelessly to meet expenses while engaging in fundraising efforts. These include initiatives like selling lottery tickets to support athletes’ participation. The community’s positive response to these fundraising campaigns showcases a united effort to ensure all athletes can represent Fiji without undue financial strain.
As the Pacific Mini Games approach, there remains a sense of determination among athletes, federations, and the communities rallying behind them, thus nurturing hope for a successful showcase of talent on an international stage. The collaborative spirit and commitment within the community are encouraging signs that Fiji’s representation in sports will thrive.
