A proposal to construct a new national hospital in Fiji is gaining momentum, as announced by Finance Minister Prof. Biman Prasad. The initiative, backed by the Government of Australia and other development partners, is part of a broader plan to enhance healthcare services not just within Fiji but across the Pacific region.
Prof. Prasad outlined that careful planning is crucial for the project’s success, stating, “A new hospital takes much planning. It has to be informed by proper planning to ensure that what is built can serve the needs of Fiji and the broader Pacific region for decades to come.” He revealed that the completed Clinical Services Plan will project healthcare needs over the next 10, 20, and 30 years, ensuring the new facility is prepared for future demands.
An important aspect of the development involves increasing the bed capacity from the current 453 at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) to 703 beds, along with expanded health services tailored to Fiji’s evolving healthcare requirements. Prof. Prasad anticipates that the entire project could cost nearly $2 billion, highlighting the state’s commitment to improving healthcare with the help of multilateral financial institutions like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
Currently, discussions are focused on identifying the most suitable site for the hospital, with seven locations under consideration, including Davuilevu, Tamavua, and the existing CWM site. The aim is to relocate the hospital to a more accessible location for the people in the greater Suva-Nausori area.
This project aligns closely with previously reported initiatives, including a $14.7 million investment from Australia aimed at the redevelopment of the CWM Hospital. The investment is part of ongoing efforts to modernize medical facilities within Fiji and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services during renovations.
The future national hospital promises to significantly elevate Fiji’s medical services, showcasing a proactive approach to health infrastructure that is poised to benefit the entire region.
