Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu has reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and honesty within government operations, stating that all officials must prioritize the truth when serving the public. In a recent address, he firmly told his colleagues, “Stop the lies,” emphasizing that honesty is crucial even when the truth may be challenging to communicate.

Rayalu’s statement aligns with his ongoing mission to rebuild trust between the government and the citizens of Fiji. He argued that the government must not sugarcoat difficult information, as misleading the public only exacerbates a history of mistrust. “When you go out to meet the people, don’t lie to them. If you can’t fix something or don’t have the answer, say so,” Rayalu remarked, highlighting the importance of accountability.

He also stressed that citizens deserve respect and have the right to hold their leaders accountable. His remarks resonate with previous calls for ethical governance, including those echoed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and other leaders, who have insisted on accountability in public service. Rayalu believes that fostering an environment of trust is essential for effective governance and for enhancing public engagement.

In reiterating his focus on integrity, Rayalu invoked a hopeful message about the future of public service in Fiji. He underscored the collective desire for a government that listens to and genuinely responds to its citizens, aiming to empower the community through transparent and honest communication.

The commitment shown by government leaders like Rayalu provides a positive outlook for Fiji, suggesting that a shift towards accountability and transparency can lead to an engaged and empowered citizenry, fostering a healthier democratic process.
