ZONAH United, the first Fijian-owned agriculture company, has taken a significant step by joining a trade mission to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This groundbreaking initiative, led by CEO Naheeda Maqbool, is aimed at positioning Fiji in one of the world’s most dynamic markets.

Maqbool emphasized that this mission transcends mere business objectives, stating, “It’s about redefining what Fijian agriculture can achieve.” She highlighted how the mission will not only open new doors for Zonah United but also benefit the hundreds of rural women and youth who are part of their movement. This aligns with their purpose-driven model that focuses on empowering over 150 marginalized women through employment, training, and entrepreneurship opportunities.

At the core of Zonah United’s mission is the combination of traditional agriculture with innovative product development under the Zorganic brand. This range of health products is designed to emphasize the science and cultural relevance of Fijian agricultural practices.

The visit was praised by Fiji’s Ambassador to the UAE, Faizal Koya, who noted that Zonah United is not only raising the Fijian flag but is also redefining global trade perspectives for small island nations. He remarked that the company’s efforts serve as a strong example of how economic transformation, women’s empowerment, and national pride can coexist with community and sustainability values.

Reflecting on broader trends, many Fijian farmers aspire to expand their exports but often encounter challenges. The Fiji Crop & Livestock Council (FCLC) has been active in addressing this by providing training and support to help farmers navigate market access and sustainable agribusiness models. The recent emphasis on establishing good relationships with overseas buyers echoes the aspirations of companies like Zonah United, aiming to strengthen Fiji’s presence in international markets.

Overall, these initiatives represent a forward-looking approach for Fijian agriculture, enhancing its capabilities while focusing on empowering local communities. The concerted efforts are indicative of a hopeful future where Fijian enterprises can thrive globally, driving economic resilience and reinforcing the potential of Fiji’s agricultural sector on the world stage.
