SIXTY percent of Fiji’s agricultural production fails to reach formal markets, according to Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica. Speaking at the Western Division mini trade show in Nadi last week, he attributed this issue not to a lack of effort from farmers, but to misalignment within existing systems.

Kamikamica emphasized the importance of events like this trade show as vital platforms for connecting with export partners, particularly in New Zealand. “We must be bold in our vision to transform trade in Fiji. It’s essential that we shift from a supply-driven model to one that’s responsive to market demand,” he stated. This involves better planning of production cycles based on real-time market data, ensuring compliance with international regulations, and coordinating supply chains efficiently from farms to markets.

The minister also underscored the importance of consistent delivery to enhance market credibility, advocating for a reliable supply of produce over sporadic one-time deliveries. He views farmers, cooperatives, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises as instrumental in driving this transformation forward. “The co-operative model provides scalability and shared infrastructure, while MSMEs infuse agility, creativity, and market reach,” he noted.

This message aligns well with the sentiments expressed at recent agricultural workshops and forums, which have stressed the necessity for collaboration among all stakeholders in the sector. For instance, similar discussions highlighted the growing export potential of Fiji’s agriculture, with increased emphasis on understanding market needs and improving product quality. Local farmers are encouraged to be proactive in understanding global demands, enhancing their engagement with international buyers.

Overall, there is optimism surrounding Fiji’s agricultural sector, as ongoing government initiatives and the collaborative efforts of farmers and exporters work towards creating a more responsive, sustainable, and profitable agricultural landscape. By aligning production with market demands and fostering cooperation in the industry, Fiji can pave the way for a brighter agricultural future that holds significant potential for economic growth.
