Fiji’s economy is heavily reliant on exports, with Trade Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, Daniel Stow, emphasizing their importance during a recent export workshop organized by Investment Fiji. Held last week, the workshop was informed by insights from an exporter training needs assessment completed earlier in the year.

Stow highlighted the vast potential of commercial agriculture in Fiji to drive economic development and increase resilience by addressing key challenges such as quality and consistency in supply. He noted that Australia and New Zealand account for nearly two-thirds of all overseas tourism arrivals to Fiji, which strengthens business ties between these regions.

In the first half of 2024, Fiji’s agricultural exports surpassed $385 million, with kava being the leading product, generating nearly $22 million—an improvement of over 20% from the previous year. Other agricultural exports also saw growth, with fresh and chilled items rising by more than 27% to reach $38.2 million.

Investment Fiji’s CEO, Kamal Chetty, stated that workshops like these are vital for preparing Fijian exporters to expand their international market reach. He emphasized that local businesses must seize the emerging opportunities created by global uncertainties.

Recalling previous initiatives, visits by Fijian exporters to Australia were noted, where partnerships were forged and trade opportunities explored. These trips have fostered a greater understanding of market demands and consumer preferences, enhancing the visibility of Fijian products abroad.

The ongoing efforts and support for local producers reflect a positive trajectory for Fiji’s export growth, signaling a hopeful future for its agricultural sector. With commitment and strategic engagement, Fiji is well-positioned to enhance its global presence and economic standing, underlining the potential for mutual benefits in international trade.
