Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka commended the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) for its crucial role in national development during the opening of the 50th Annual FICA Congress at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Nadi. He characterized members of FICA as “nation-builders,” underscoring their contributions that extend far beyond traditional accounting.
Rabuka noted FICA’s significant impact over its 53-year history in shaping the robust framework of modern Fiji. He expressed that the theme for this year’s congress, “Shaping Fiji for Tomorrow’s Challenges and Opportunities,” serves as a call to action for professionals gathered from various sectors to collaborate on building a resilient and inclusive economy.
While addressing pressing economic challenges, Rabuka acknowledged the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the realities of climate change, and the necessity for inclusive economic growth. He highlighted the pivotal role that Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play in the nation’s recovery, urging FICA to continue its involvement in developing effective MSME policies.
In line with previous discussions, Rabuka emphasized the importance of sustainability reporting and the need for accountants to lead initiatives related to climate finance, particularly in aligning with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. He called for accountants who grasp climate risks to help in transitioning toward a green economy.
The Prime Minister concluded his remarks by encouraging young professionals to take the lead with courage and integrity, reiterating their transformative potential as more than just accountants but as architects of national progress.
The congress not only serves as a celebration of the accounting profession in Fiji but also represents a collaborative effort to address economic hurdles and seize new growth opportunities. As Fiji navigates these challenges, the ongoing dialogue illustrates a hopeful trajectory towards sustained economic prosperity and partnership among financial professionals.
