The Fiji Police Force faced significant financial demands in addressing cases of violence against children (VAC) in 2023, with an estimated expenditure of $9.98 million. This figure emerged from a study conducted by UNICEF alongside the Ministry of Women and Children, which investigated the economic implications of child violence.

The report indicated that about 6.57 percent of all registered crimes, equivalent to 1,101 cases, involved offenses against children. By applying this percentage to the total operational budget of the police force, which amounts to $152 million, the study arrived at the substantial cost incurred solely from handling VAC cases.

Further analysis highlighted the financial burden placed on the judicial system, estimating the cost of processing a child through the criminal court system at approximately $3 million. This represents the judicial portion of crime-related expenses specifically linked to child offenses.

The study also recognized the broader financial implications across various governmental sectors, including health, child welfare, and education. It emphasized that the costs associated with responding to VAC and its effects—such as delayed education and increased special education needs—contribute to an increase in expenses across these sectors.

Despite the staggering numbers, this data sheds light on the urgent need for enhanced protective measures and support systems for children in Fiji. By investing in preventative strategies and victim support, the government can work towards reducing the incidents of violence against children and ultimately lower these associated costs.

In summary, while the financial impact of VAC is daunting, understanding these costs emphasizes the crucial need for systemic changes aimed at protecting children and fostering safer environments for their development. Together, communities and authorities can strive towards a brighter, violence-free future for the children of Fiji.
