Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai emphasized that the standards showcased by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire future generations of Fijian athletes. His remarks were made during a welcoming ceremony on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.
Tuwai acknowledged that while the team did not achieve the desired results, there remains potential for a comeback. He expressed his gratitude, saying, “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and guidance during our preparation for Paris and on our return.” He extended thanks to the coaches, management, and supporters who rallied behind the teams.
Regretting that they returned without the gold medal, he offered an apology to the nation, acknowledging the high expectations placed upon them and the disappointment felt after a narrow loss. Tuwai shared the difficulty of being away from loved ones during the month-long tournament.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and commended the coaches and management for their support throughout the tournament. He highlighted the leadership and expertise of those involved, specifically mentioning Mr. Osea Kolonisau for his dedication.
Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey addressed the gathering to celebrate the teams’ extraordinary achievements, bringing pride to the nation. He expressed immense gratitude for their silver medal achievement at the 2024 Olympic Games, recognizing that their efforts embodied the spirit of Fiji.
Mazey acknowledged the contributions of the coaching staff and medical team, noting the vital role they played in supporting the young athletes. He reminded everyone that the silver medal represented countless hours of dedication and sacrifice. He encouraged ongoing support for the teams, highlighting the silver medal as a stepping stone toward even greater future achievements.
