The Fijian government is unveiling its 2025-2026 National Budget with a strong focus on putting citizens first, prioritizing sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and law enforcement. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad highlighted that this budget is the result of extensive public consultations, which reflect a rising public trust in budget processes and a commitment to inclusive growth.
During a forum hosted by the Fiji Development Bank, Prof Prasad emphasized the government’s prudent approach to increasing spending while improving services. Encouragingly, Fiji’s debt-to-GDP ratio has seen a significant decrease from 90 percent to 77 percent over the past two years, enhancing the country’s ability to invest in vital services.
Prof Prasad noted that the current economic indicators are positive, marked by rising investor confidence and interest from the diaspora, signaling that Fiji’s economy is on the mend. He reiterated that simply continuing with business-as-usual is no longer a viable option; there is a need for reform and an updated approach to governance, especially within public agencies.
The Minister stressed the importance of community involvement in the budget process, describing it as a milestone in public engagement. This year’s budget aims to be results-driven, incorporating feedback from various stakeholders, thus fostering a stronger collaboration between the government, private sectors, and civil society.
This budget reflects a long-term vision to elevate Fiji to high-income status within a decade, focusing on fiscal responsibility while ensuring that essential services are accessible to all citizens. By supporting key infrastructure projects and prioritizing the needs highlighted by the public, the government is positioning itself to not only address immediate challenges but also ensure sustained economic development.
The positive unfolding of these plans holds promising prospects for all Fijians, suggesting a future where economic resilience and improved living standards can be realized through proactive governance and community engagement.
