Fijians are actively engaged in back-to-school preparations following the announcement of a $200 government assistance initiative designed to support parents as they get their children ready for the new academic year. This financial aid, released yesterday, is particularly beneficial for families facing economic challenges.
Patricia Wilson, a resident of Caubati and mother of four, expressed her gratitude for the support, noting that with her husband being the family’s sole provider, the assistance has been a significant help. “I’m very thankful that I received the assistance. Since my husband is the only breadwinner in our family at the moment, it’s been a big help,” she shared.
Additionally, residents from maritime islands have traveled to the mainland to shop for the 2026 school year. University student Ateca Kanavakalou was seen shopping with her siblings, who attend school back on Gau Island. She emphasized the importance of the government aid, saying, “My sister came from Gau to Suva for the holidays and also to do some back-to-school shopping. The Government’s assistance has helped my family, especially my younger siblings, as we are now able to buy school items.”
According to Ramapa Naidu, Central Divisional Manager at Post Fiji, there has been a noticeable increase in sales during this back-to-school season compared to previous years. “We never expected this kind of crowd. This year is really good in comparison to past years,” he commented.
The government also plans to disburse the final batch of the $200 back-to-school assistance by Monday, further ensuring that families have the resources they need to start the school year on a positive note. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to supporting education and easing the financial burdens faced by families in Fiji.
