Fijians from all corners of the nation have come together to honor the memory of the late Minister for Agriculture, Vatimi Rayalu, who passed away recently at the age of 57 due to a brief illness. The traditional mourning ceremony, known as iReguregu, commenced in Suva, drawing farmers and community members from various regions, including a notable group from Navosa. These farmers traveled across challenging terrains to express their gratitude towards Rayalu, who had significantly impacted their livelihoods through his unwavering support.

Among those present were members of the Navosa Beef Farmers, who credited Rayalu for empowering them and enhancing agricultural practices. Representatives from the vanua of Nawaka in Nadi also made the journey to pay their respects, reflecting on Rayalu’s frequent visits to their communities and his dedication to improving their farming conditions.

Rayalu’s funeral arrangements have garnered the participation of not only family members but also non-governmental organizations and development partners who recognized his substantial contributions to the agriculture sector. His legacy, characterized by his commitment to public service and community welfare, resonates throughout Fiji as many remember him as a humble yet visionary leader.

The iReguregu is set to continue today, culminating in Rayalu’s interment tomorrow at the Old Suva Cemetery. As the nation mourns his loss, there remains a hopeful sentiment among the community to uphold and continue Rayalu’s efforts towards enhancing the agricultural landscape of Fiji. His proactive drive ensures that his work will inspire future leaders in the sector to prioritize compassion and development in their methods.

The overwhelming turnout and shared reflections on Rayalu’s life and service serve as a reminder of the impact one dedicated individual can have in advancing the lives of many Fijians.
