Fijiana Star Vani Buleki Joins Bulldogs, Ushering in a New Era for Women’s Rugby

Vani Buleki, the former Fijiana 7s forward and Olympian, has officially joined the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs for the inaugural NRLW season. This marks a significant milestone in her athletic career and presents a new opportunity for women’s rugby in Fiji.

Buleki’s inclusion in the Bulldogs squad was announced alongside fellow players Moana Courtenay and Monica Tagoai. The excitement surrounding her transfer follows a successful campaign in the Super W with Western Force, where she had a standout season and was previously recognized for her contributions to the Fiji Sevens, including her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Head Coach Brayden Wiliame expressed optimism about Buleki’s transition from rugby union to league, highlighting her speed, defensive prowess, and remarkable work rate. He believes that Buleki’s skills will enhance the Bulldogs’ backline and contribute positively to the team’s dynamics.

This signing not only emphasizes Buleki’s individual accomplishments but also reflects the growing opportunities for women in sports, particularly in the rugby domain. Similar to other rising stars, such as Salote Cikobia, who are beginning to make their mark in both local and international rugby, Buleki’s journey serves as inspiration for aspiring female athletes across the Pacific region.

As Buleki prepares to step into this new chapter with the Bulldogs, her story fuels a hopeful narrative for women’s rugby in Fiji, illustrating a commitment to nurturing talent and promoting competitive levels of play for women. The future appears bright, as more female athletes gain visibility and representation in sports, paving the way for the next generation.
