The Fiji Airways Fijiana sevens team achieved a significant milestone by climbing up the HSBC SVNS Series points table during the recent Vancouver Sevens. Captained by Sesenieli Donu, the Fijiana reached the Cup grand final, where they faced off against the dominant New Zealand team, ultimately losing 41-7.
Entering the Vancouver Sevens in 11th place, the team’s impressive performance allowed them to ascend to the eighth spot on the points table. Their journey through the tournament was marked by a series of strong performances, beginning with a commanding 46-0 victory over Brazil, followed by a decisive 28-7 win against Japan in the Cup semifinals.
On the other hand, the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team, coached by Osea Kolinisau, faced a setback as they dropped from their top position in the series standings. They are now third, tied with South Africa, while Argentina leads with 68 points. The men’s team experienced a frustrating loss in the Cup semifinals against South Africa (10-12) and subsequently fell to Spain in the third-place playoff (22-7). In contrast to the women’s side’s progress, this decline highlights the challenges faced by the men’s team as they continue to strive for success on the international circuit.
Despite the mixed outcomes, the journeys of both teams showcase their resilience and potential, particularly the Fijiana’s significant steps forward in the tournament. Their improved results signal a hopeful future for women’s rugby in Fiji, perhaps inspiring greater support and development as they compete on the world stage.
As both teams look ahead, there is optimism for continued progress and successful performances in forthcoming competitions. The upcoming Rugby World Seven Series events will provide them with opportunities to further establish their presence and enhance their standings.
