Vodafone Fijiana head coach Ioan Cunningham has selected a lively and youthful match-day 23 to face Tonga in the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship opener at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. This squad notably includes five debutants, showcasing a commitment to integrating fresh talent into the team.
The debutants are:
– **Litiana Vueti**: A fullback from Visoto, Ovalau, previously with Lautoka and a part of the Fijiana Drua squad.
– **Salote Nailolo**: A formidable back from Nakorolevu, Namara, who has played for Ballantine Memorial School and Naitasiri Secondary before joining Nasinu.
– **Michella’e Stolz**: Originally from Naselesele, Taveuni, Stolz developed her rugby skills in New Zealand.
– **Selai Naliva**: A hooker from Keyasi, Navosa, who has experience with Suva Grammar and the Suva Provincial team.
– **Manuqalo Noame Komaitai**: From Bau Island and a member of the British Army, she offers versatility from the bench.
Cunningham emphasized the blend of experience and youthful energy in the squad, stating, “Selection is always challenging. We seek more than just talent; adaptability, mental toughness, and the ability to thrive in unfamiliar environments are key.”
Several strategic adjustments have also been made from their last encounter with the Wallaroos. Bitila Tawake and Tiana Robanakadavu, who were substitutes in that match, now take starting roles in the front row alongside Loraini Senivutu. Captain Alfreda Fisher is transitioning from number 6 to 7, while Nunia Daunioala, who missed the match against Australia, is returning at blindside flanker, bringing enhanced mobility to the side.
Cunningham highlighted the areas needing improvement, referencing their previous performance against the Wallaroos where they managed only 31% territory and missed 41 tackles. Their goals are to achieve at least 50% territory and drop the missed tackles to under 15 per match.
With this strategic lineup, the Vodafone Fijiana XV is not only gearing up to defend their title but also aims to inspire future generations of female athletes in Fiji as they make a mark on the international rugby stage. The team’s commitment and robust preparation indicate a hopeful outlook for the tournament, promising exciting performances that celebrate Fijian rugby.
