The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team is focused on ending their season on a high note as they prepare for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series season finale this weekend at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles, scheduled for May 3-4. Head coach Richard Walker has led the team to LA a week early, allowing the players to adjust to the local time zone and build momentum for the crucial matches ahead.
Walker expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, noting their improved performance and spirit: “We wanted a different build-up. The girls are doing great.” The final tournament will feature a fresh start for all teams, as they will be divided into only two pools with a clean slate, meaning any team can emerge victorious in the quest for the LA 7s championship.
Having successfully secured a spot among the top eight teams after their recent tournaments in Hong Kong and Singapore, Fijiana’s new goal is to clinch the title in Los Angeles. They are determined to fine-tune their strategies, particularly on defense, to handle a challenging group comprising Australia, USA, and France.
Walker highlighted the adjustments and bond formed with the players under his coaching, acknowledging the initial challenges in building trust but noting significant improvements since then. The team’s defense is a focal point of their training, emphasizing the need for coordination in their defensive strategy as they confront formidable opponents.
As their opening match against Australia is set for 6:50 am, followed by contests against France and the USA, the Fijiana 7s are motivated to showcase their resilience and skill on this prestigious stage. Their presence in this championship not only reflects their hard work but also symbolizes the growing potential of women’s rugby in Fiji, inspiring future generations of athletes eager to follow in their footsteps.
The upcoming tournament serves as a platform for Fijiana to demonstrate their capabilities and strive for excellence, promising an exciting weekend for fans and supporters.
