Interim head coach Timoci Volavola has introduced a fresh roster for the Fiji women’s rugby sevens team this season. The updated lineup includes only three experienced players, with Ana Maria Naimasi among them. Following a challenging period for the team, including a 12th place finish at the Paris Olympic Games in August, Volavola is optimistic that this new squad will rejuvenate support for women’s sevens rugby.

Volavola noted that many players from last season have moved on, emphasizing that he will finalize his 12-member team on Thursday after reviewing their medical evaluations. He has observed significant progress among the new players since their initial training sessions, which he considers a positive development.

“This is a difficult start given last year’s performance, but I am determined to face the challenge,” Volavola stated. His primary goal is to regain support for the women’s team, highlighting the dedication of the players who have responded positively to his invitation to compete for a spot in the upcoming leg of the tournament.

The coach mentioned changes to the team culture, focusing on discipline and attitude both on and off the field. He clarified that players who do not adhere to the established guidelines will not remain on the team, as they could create a negative atmosphere.

Volavola aims to maintain a position in the top eight of the core team while preparing his players for their first major tournament. The Fijiana will compete in Pool A against Australia, Ireland, and China. He acknowledged the strength of these teams, which performed well at the Olympics, and noted that the new season brings renewed vigor across all squads.

“We are committed to working hard and aiming for our goals,” Volavola added, showing his dedication to fostering a competitive yet supportive environment. Former sevens player Emosi Mulevoro is assisting in this effort, bringing additional experience to the coaching team.

This fresh start symbolizes an opportunity for growth and transformation within Fijiana, setting the stage for potential success in the upcoming tournaments. The commitment of the new players and the support of the coaching staff could herald a promising season ahead.

In summary, the interim coach’s fresh approach, alongside a new roster of eager players, signals a hopeful new chapter for the Fijiana 7s team. With focus and determination, they are poised to rise from past challenges and strive for excellence.
