Fijian-born Jone Kubu has been selected to represent the Kenyan national team in the upcoming Vancouver Sevens tournament, scheduled for February 21-23. Kubu, who operates as a halfback, currently plays for the Kabras Sugar club and brings a wealth of experience to the squad.

At 36 years old, Kubu has been an integral part of the Kenya Sevens team’s preparations, training diligently prior to the official squad announcement. His journey in Kenya began in 2015 when he arrived with the Samurai Rugby team for the Safari Sevens. Following the tournament, he chose to settle in the country and joined the Kabras Sugar club, where he has enjoyed significant success, winning four Kenya Cup titles.

In the Vancouver Sevens, Kenya will be competing in Pool A against strong opponents, including the Perth Sevens champions Argentina, the Cape Town Sevens finalists France, and Great Britain, which ranks just ahead of Kenya at 8th place. This tough lineup will provide Kubu and his teammates with a challenging yet exciting opportunity to showcase their skills on an international stage.

Kubu’s selection highlights the growing diversity and talent within the Kenyan rugby scene, which continues to evolve and compete at high levels in the sport. It will be interesting to see how Kenya performs against formidable teams in Vancouver, as they aim to build upon their successes and strengthen their standing in the rugby world.
