WAISIKI Naqiolevu, a 31-year-old hailing from Soso, Kadavu, has returned to Fiji after completing a significant two-year journey of academic enrichment in India. He earned a Master of Arts in English Literature at the prestigious Delhi University, funded by an Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship.
Reflecting on his transformative experience, Mr. Naqiolevu expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Fiji in India, a place he now considers a second home. “When I first arrived in India, everything was new to me. The people, the language, the food, and the lively streets were all part of a vibrant culture,” he shared. He noted that his experience taught him that diversity should be embraced as a strength rather than a weakness.
Despite the challenges of adapting to a new society, Mr. Naqiolevu found beauty in India’s blend of the past, present, and future, as well as in the harmonious coexistence of various religions and languages. His educational experience at Delhi University extended beyond traditional literature lessons. He stated, “My professors taught me not just literature but also the rich tapestry of beliefs that exist in society.”
Culturally immersed, Mr. Naqiolevu enjoyed local festivals such as Diwali and Holi, indulging in street food and chai throughout the day. However, his initial week in India posed difficulties as he navigated a culture where his language and traditions were not commonplace. He credits his faith for being a crucial source of support during these times, emphasizing the importance of prayer in coping with challenges, stating, “I believe it’s my relationship with God that has constantly been an anchor for me.”
Now back in Fiji, Mr. Naqiolevu is determined to inspire fellow iTaukei and Fijians to seek similar academic opportunities. “If I can do it, they can too. There’s always hope,” he asserted, noting that he learned about the ICCR scholarship through a friend while studying at the Fiji National University. He believes there are ample opportunities to improve lives and uplift communities.
As he contemplates his future, Mr. Naqiolevu aims to contribute to the academic world, carrying forward the lessons of unity and resilience he learned during his time in India. His journey serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating the power of education and cross-cultural experiences in fostering growth and inspiration.
