Former Fijian Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, has taken legal action against Alexandra Forwood, filing criminal proceedings at the Parramatta Station in Sydney. Tabuya stated that the Australian Federal Police have accepted her complaint, which they plan to investigate alongside international partners like Interpol. Tabuya announced her intention to also pursue legal actions against Victor Lal in the UK during her upcoming travel there.
Ms. Tabuya explained her motivation for these actions, emphasizing the significant impact of online harassment on women and girls, particularly in light of International Women’s Day. “If I don’t see this through — for all the women and girls who do not have the opportunities that I have, who may feel defenseless and voiceless — I believe I need to see this through,” she said, underlining the importance of justice for women facing online violence.
Referring to studies that indicate women are targeted for online abuse ten times more than men, Tabuya highlighted the prevalence of harmful practices like sextortion, where victims are threatened with the exposure of private images unless money is paid. She shared that such exploitation often stems from intimate relationships, complicating the personal histories involved.
This ongoing fight against digital gender-based violence reflects broader societal challenges, particularly serving as a call to action for better protections for women online. Tabuya’s commitment to pursuing justice may inspire further discussions and initiatives aimed at tackling the issues of online harassment and privacy violations in Fiji and beyond.
Her proactive response not only aims to hold those accountable for such acts but also encourages victims to come forward and seek justice, fostering an environment where women’s rights are prioritized and respected. The hopes for meaningful reform in online safety legislation and a strengthened support system for victims of cybercrimes continue to grow, further emphasizing the need for collective societal efforts in addressing these pressing issues.
