A family in Labasa has garnered accolades for their impressive performance of Hindi folk songs during the 146th Girmit celebration. Apakuki Ratucoka, a talented musician skilled in both singing and playing instruments, attributes his passion for this music to his work in evangelism, which led him to engage with Hindi songs.
Ratucoka noted that mastering the lyrics posed initial challenges due to language barriers, but his commitment and regular practice allowed him to perfect his craft. “I’ve been doing evangelism work for Hindus, and that’s where I learned about playing instruments and singing in Hindi,” he shared. His determination, combined with support from his children, has contributed to their shared appreciation of music as a means to foster inclusion of different ethnicities within society.
He expressed a belief that the arrival of the Girmitiyas in Fiji was divinely orchestrated, bringing cultural diversity that has played a vital role in shaping the nation. The family’s performance at the Girmit celebration not only showcased their musical talent but also served as a celebration of the cultural richness and the enduring spirit of the Girmitiya legacy.
This year’s Girmit commemorations, which occur in the Northern Division for the first time, have highlighted the importance of the Girmit narrative in fostering understanding and unity among Fiji’s diverse communities. The theme, “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” resonates deeply, reflecting both the challenges faced by the Girmitiyas and the collective aspirations for a cohesive society moving forward.
As similar celebrations unfold, including cultural performances and community engagements, they ignite hope for continued collaboration among Fiji’s diverse populations. This sense of unity and cultural pride instilled during the Girmit festivities serves as a powerful reminder of the positive journey towards inclusivity and a brighter future for all Fijians.
