The Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad members are deeply enjoying their return to their home island, a heartwarming experience for halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu. This week, they are part of a pre-season camp in Namalata, Kadavu, where they had their first training session at the Namalata Central School grounds accompanied by a traditional welcome ceremony.
Kuruvoli, 25, from Nabouwalu, Ono, expressed the significance of this trip, as it allows him to reconnect with his family roots. He reflected on how rare it is for the “Western gang” to visit, adding that it’s meaningful for the Kadavu boys to interact with their communities and families. He also mentioned the joy of giving back through training sessions for the local youth.
Karawalevu echoed Kuruvoli’s feelings, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to hold the pre-season camp in Kadavu. He described it as a wonderful experience, especially for teammates visiting the island for the first time. Baselala, from Solotavui, Nakasaleka, also spoke passionately about being back on his “home soil,” highlighting the importance of team bonding and showcasing the beauty of Kadavu, which he called a “hidden paradise.”
On the training front, the squad took to Namalata Bay for a challenging boat race exercise while local villagers cheered them on. Head coach Glen Jackson remarked on the enriching experience, which included the boat trip, favorable weather, and participation in a traditional kava ceremony.
The Drua squad is set to return from their Kadavu adventure tomorrow (Friday), having strengthened their connections both with their heritage and each other.
This initiative not only fosters team spirit but also emphasizes the importance of community and heritage in sports, showcasing how local connections can enhance an athlete’s experience. It’s a beautiful reminder of the significance of returning to one’s roots, both personally and collectively as a team.
