As the Fijian Drua gears up for its fifth season in Super Rugby Pacific, Fiji Rugby Union Board Chair John Sanday reflects on the solid partnership between the union and the franchise, noting that there is still potential for growth. The Drua has become an essential component of Fiji’s rugby development, offering local talent a professional arena to advance to higher honors, including representation for the Flying Fijians.
Sanday pointed out that while expectations for the franchise are increasing, the current structural arrangements limit the extent of the Fiji Rugby Union’s involvement. “When we came in last year, that arrangement and the whole setup was already in place. So it’s working OK. I’m sure it can work better,” he commented.
Counter Ruck Limited is responsible for managing the Drua franchise, which is owned 49 percent by the Fiji Rugby Union and 51 percent by the Fiji Government. Sanday elaborated, “Historically, we must understand that Counter Ruck runs the Drua franchise. There’s also a relationship agreement that kind of ring-fences Counter Ruck so that there’s no outside interference coming in.” This structure was designed to safeguard the franchise’s independence, particularly during difficult times in Fiji Rugby’s journey.
While acknowledging the boundaries set by the current governance model, Sanday reaffirmed the Fiji Rugby Union’s unwavering support for the Drua, recognizing its vital role in player development. He stated, “We support the franchise in whatever way we can, because it’s a pathway for our players and where they get some really seriously good exposure. It’s also a professional environment in which they can grow and develop.”
Beyond athletic performance, Sanday highlighted the financial security and career advancement opportunities the franchise provides. “They get to earn some good money, which they probably would not ordinarily do in such a situation. So in all of that combined, it’s working well. It will get better, I’m pretty sure. And we must just keep supporting it, regardless of how it’s performing.”
As the Drua prepares to face the Brumbies next Saturday at 3:35 PM in Ba, fans can look forward to watching the game live on FBC Sports, showcasing the continued growth and promise of Fiji’s rugby talent on an international stage.
