Fijian discus thrower Glenn Finau is set to compete in the Pacific Mini Games for the first time, expressing his enthusiasm for being selected to the team. The young athlete, a student at Suva Grammar School, explained his journey to qualification included initial setbacks, where he struggled in the first two trials but ultimately found success in the final round, thanks to his coaches, Drew and Deborah.
While balancing academics and school commitments, particularly through the cadet corps program, Finau faced challenges in managing his training schedule. “The preparations have been going well, but we had to do cadets after the Cokes Finals, meaning we missed a week or two of training,” he noted. However, he remained focused on improving his technique and integrating weight training into his routine.
Finau emphasized the importance of prayer in overcoming obstacles during his preparation, stating, “God through prayer every day… always pray before food, before and after training.” His dedication reflects a broader trend among Fijian athletes, who increasingly rely on both physical training and personal faith in their athletic journeys.
Competing alongside other members of Team Fiji, including Loata Lewageena and Tyrone Ali, Finau’s participation is part of a larger effort from Fiji’s athletics community. With coaches and fellow athletes rallying together, there is a collective hope that they can excel in Palau, furthering Fiji’s growing reputation in athletics.
This event marks an important milestone not just for Finau, but for many emerging athletes in Fiji, showcasing their talent on an international stage. The excitement and support seen within the Fijian athletic community signify a bright future for these young competitors as they work hard to achieve their dreams.
