Fijian Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has expressed strong support for Fijian peacekeepers stationed with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) during his recent visit to the Golan Heights. This visit aimed to connect with the troops and assess conditions in one of the world’s most complex regions.

Starting his tour at Camp Ziouani and Position 22, Tikoduadua laid a wreath in remembrance of Fijian peacekeepers who lost their lives in service to global peace. He emphasized the significance of their ongoing mission, stating that it reflects Fiji’s enduring commitment to international peace and security.

Throughout his visit, Tikoduadua engaged with the troops, listened to their stories, and inspected the facilities they operate under. He noted the challenging living conditions at Position 22, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism. The Minister pointed out that many army personnel raised critical concerns regarding the need for improved equipment and logistical support, issues that he pledged to address upon his return to Fiji.

Importantly, Tikoduadua highlighted the need for a culture of mentorship within the forces and emphasized the importance of advancing gender inclusion in military deployments. He stated, “The issue isn’t skill—it’s structural. Our job is to make sure the system gives everyone a fair chance to serve” and noted the barriers to deploying capable women in these roles.

The visit aligns with Fiji’s National Security Strategy, which prioritizes sustainability and people-first policies in peacekeeping efforts. Tikoduadua reiterated that peacekeeping will continue to be a cornerstone of Fiji’s security initiatives, and he aims to reinforce these commitments through ongoing international collaborations.

Tikoduadua’s proactive engagement and acknowledgment of the troops’ sacrifices signify not only a commitment to their welfare but also a broader strategy for enhancing Fiji’s role in international peacekeeping. This approach fosters hope for better support and recognition of Fijian forces globally, reinforcing soldiers’ morale and their invaluable contributions to maintaining peace in conflict zones.
