Anticipation is rising within the local boxing community as 25-year-old Gabriel Sokobalavu gears up for his professional debut in the cruiserweight division against Samuela Naqari. Scheduled for tomorrow at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, this match represents a pivotal moment in Sokobalavu’s career, having dedicated himself to training since November of the previous year.

Hailing from Vanuavatu, Lau, Sokobalavu takes inspiration from his older brother, Semi Dauloloma, a seasoned boxer. He emphasizes the crucial role of his brother’s support during challenging times in his journey. “When I face hardships and problems, my brother has always been there to encourage me and push me,” Sokobalavu noted, underscoring the significance of familial support in achieving his boxing aspirations.

In addition to physical training, Sokobalavu has also focused on improving his family’s circumstances. He expressed a strong motivation to uplift their living standards, aspiring to secure a house and a car for them.

Sokobalavu has acknowledged Naqari’s dedication to training ahead of their encounter but remains self-assured, stating, “We will see who the real champion is on the day of the fight.”

The event, put together by Blue Water Boxing Promotions, is set to provide an exhilarating experience for fans, with overseas audiences able to watch through pay-per-view on FBC’s viti.plus. Events like this one not only highlight local talent but also play a significant role in boosting the popularity of boxing in Fiji, with recent fights having received extensive attention and robust ticket sales.

As Sokobalavu prepares to make an impression in the ring, the Fiji boxing landscape is buzzing with optimism. The enthusiasm for both established and emerging fighters reflects a promising future for Fijian boxing, with athletes like Sokobalavu leading the way and inspiring others to pursue excellence in the sport.
