Unionized workers from the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) recently conducted a secret ballot concerning potential industrial action, reflecting a collective determination among members of the National Union of Workers – Fiji. The ballot took place across various WAF depots, including locations such as Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Labasa, as well as the head office.

The driving force behind this ballot was WAF’s failure to negotiate a conclusive agreement on the Union’s claims for 2024, as outlined in their log of claims for all members. According to the union, the outcome of the three-day voting process yielded positive results, signaling a strong mandate for future actions.

This situation mirrors ongoing labor movements across different sectors in Fiji, highlighting widespread concerns among workers regarding their conditions and negotiations with employers. Similar actions have been observed among healthcare workers at the Ba and Lautoka hospitals, where union members also participated in secret ballots to address grievances related to working conditions and wages.

The recent developments among WAF employees, along with those of healthcare workers, underscore a growing collective movement advocating for better labor practices in Fiji. The proactive approach taken by these unions reflects a commitment to dialogue and negotiation, with hope for improvements that could enhance the working environment for all involved.

Overall, there is potential for meaningful discussions between workers and management that could lead to better labor conditions and a collaborative future. The unity displayed by WAF workers can pave the way for positive changes in their workplace, provided that open communication is maintained.
