The Uluda Princess, a new inter-island ferry, has officially arrived in Fiji, marking a significant addition to Interlink Shipping Line Ltd’s fleet. Primarily dedicated to serving the community of Rakiraki in the province of Ra, this vessel was envisioned by the late Ashok Kumar, the company’s founder. Interlink Shipping emphasized the importance of fulfilling Kumar’s dream to support the region, showcasing his strong ties to Rakiraki.

Designed with a vibrant dolphin motif on its exterior, the Uluda Princess serves as a reminder of the critical marine ecosystems in the Vatu-i-Ra Passage, which play a vital role in sustaining local livelihoods. The company has emphasized its commitment to protecting these environments, urging against practices that disturb marine habitats.

The ferry, which has an impressive speed capability of up to 13.6 nautical miles per hour, departed from Japan in mid-May before reaching Suva on June 1. The Uluda Princess measures 62 meters in length and 14 meters in width, built in Japan in 1992. Along with its latest addition, Interlink Shipping operates several other vessels, including MV Ohana and MV Yavirau, and is proactively engaged in campaigns aimed at preserving Fiji’s reefs, oceans, and traditional fishing grounds.

The establishment of the Uluda Princess aligns with similar developments in Fiji’s maritime sector, where enhancements in ferry services are increasingly critical for local transportation and community connectivity. For example, Goundar Shipping’s recent launches, including the MV Captain Inoke and other vessels, reflect the shared goal of improving transport infrastructure across Fiji, despite facing administrative challenges.

Overall, the arrival of the Uluda Princess underscores a broader commitment to improving inter-island connectivity, fostering local economies, and enabling the preservation of Fiji’s unique marine environment, paving the way for a brighter future for the communities it serves.
