Filipe Batiwale has been appointed as Fiji’s new Online Safety Commissioner. A senior lawyer with a practicing certificate in Australia, Batiwale specializes in areas such as commercial law, cyber law, and digital asset protection.

Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Batiwale stated, “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as Fiji’s Online Safety Commissioner. I look forward to serving the people of Fiji and addressing the challenges we face in the online space.” He emphasized the increasing prevalence of online harm, highlighting the critical role of the Commission in creating safer digital environments.

Batiwale plans to focus on ensuring that the Commission effectively executes its responsibilities under the Online Safety Act. He aims to work collaboratively with stakeholders to promote accountability, education, and responsible online interactions.

This development follows the previous appointment of Anne Dunn Baleilevuka as Commissioner in December 2018, who subsequently resigned. Since her departure, Tajeshwari Devi has served as the acting Commissioner.

Overall, the appointment of Batiwale signals a strong commitment to improving online safety in Fiji, a crucial issue in today’s increasingly digital world. By addressing the challenges of online harm, the commission aims to foster a safer online community for all Fijians.
