Fiji celebrated the commissioning of the RFNS Timo, a Guardian-class patrol boat, at the Naval Base in Walu Bay this morning. This advanced vessel, gifted by the Australian government, enhances the Fiji Navy’s capabilities in safeguarding the country’s maritime borders.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Prof. Prasad, highlighted the vessel’s importance, especially in light of recent drug detection increases that suggest a maritime delivery method for these illicit substances. “Her presence will enhance our readiness, strengthen our partnerships with allies, and promote peace and stability in our region,” he stated, affirming the significance of increased maritime security measures.

The RFNS Timo replaces the previously decommissioned RFNS Puamau, addressing a critical gap in Fiji’s naval operations. The vessel, built by Austal, was originally intended for Timor-Leste but was renamed Timo in honor of Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who lost his life during World War II. Fiji Navy Commander Captain Timoci Natuva expressed gratitude to Australia for this addition, emphasizing its role in keeping Fiji’s maritime borders secure.

The RFNS Timo will operate with a crew of 22 members from various navy branches, including electricians and marine engineers, ensuring effective upkeep and operational readiness. It will complement Fiji’s Maritime Essential Services Centre and C-27 Spartan Aircraft, fortifying the nation’s preparedness for natural disasters and enhancing coastal rescue capabilities.

This development reflects not just on enhanced national security but also on the strong bilateral relationship between Fiji and Australia, showcasing their ongoing commitment to regional cooperation in addressing shared security challenges. The integration of the RFNS Timo into Fiji’s maritime fleet signifies a positive step towards strengthening Fiji’s defenses, paving the way for a hopeful and secure future for the nation’s maritime interests.
