President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu welcomed back soldiers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces First Battalion at a reception held at State House yesterday. The occasion celebrated their valuable service under the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq, showcasing Fiji’s ongoing dedication to global peacekeeping efforts.

This deployment is part of Fiji’s historical role in United Nations peacekeeping missions, which emphasizes the nation’s steadfast commitment to fostering international cooperation and security. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has established a rich legacy in such operations, with Fijian soldiers gaining recognition for their professionalism, discipline, and resilience in some of the most perilous situations worldwide.

During the reception, President Lalabalavu expressed his gratitude toward the returning soldiers, acknowledging their dedication, commitment, and sacrifices throughout their tour of duty in Iraq. He praised their contribution not only to Fiji but also to the international community at large.

The event was attended by notable figures, including former Heads of State Major-General Joji Konrote and Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, members of Cabinet, representatives from the Diplomatic Corps, civil society, and senior leadership of the RFMF. This gathering highlights a collective appreciation for the soldiers’ efforts and the significance of peacekeeping in promoting global stability.
