Weather Update – It’s Gonna Be a Wild One!

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 5:30 AM on Wednesday, December 17, 2025

Hold onto your hats, folks! A STRONG WIND WARNING is waving at all residents of Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the nearby smaller islands, along with our friends in the Northern Lau Group. If you thought it was breezy yesterday, just wait—Mother Nature is turning up the dial!

And as if that’s not enough excitement, we’ve got a HEAVY RAIN WARNING and a FLASH FLOOD WARNING in effect for the entire Fiji group. Yep, it’s a whole stormy extravaganza down here!

What’s brewing? A tropical depression known as TD03F is currently hanging out about 510 km West-Northwest of Yasawa i Rara, lazily drifting east-southeast at a casual 10 km/hr. Think of it as a slightly grumpy tortoise heading our way—still, it brings some considerable rain and wind with it!

As we look at the forecast for today, expect some fresh to strong northerly winds hitting up to 50 km/hr, and for the daredevils, gusts could reach a jaw-dropping 70 km/hr over Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the nearby smaller islands (it’s not the kind of wind that makes your hair look good, trust us).

Seas are going to be rough, so if you’re planning to channel your inner Aquaman, maybe reconsider!

Rain will come in heavy bouts, with the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Northern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby small islands getting the most of this tropical drama. Occasional rain and isolated heavy downpours are on the menu elsewhere, with a side of thunderstorms. Also, be on the lookout for flash flooding in low-lying areas as persistent heavy rainfall might bring on the waterworks.

Looking ahead to Thursday, we’re still in for some scattered showers and isolated heavy falls, particularly in eastern Viti Levu, Southern and Eastern Vanua Levu, Lau, and the Lomaiviti group. Partly cloudy skies elsewhere, but don’t let that fool you—afternoon or evening showers, along with possible thunderstorms, are waiting in the wings. Sea conditions: moderate to fresh southeast winds, and a reminder—stay away from those rocky shores!
