Weather Update Alert!
Issued from our trusty National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 11:34 AM on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Grab your umbrellas, folks, because we’ve got a HEAVY RAIN WARNING in effect for the entire Fiji group. If you thought your hair could get frizzy in humidity, just wait until you step outside!
In addition, a STRONG WIND WARNING is still tugging at the picnic blankets for the land areas of Yasawa, Mamanuca groups, Northern Vanua Levu, and the exciting western and northern portions of Viti Levu, as well as Kadavu and nearby islands. Hang on to your hats, or at least make sure they’re tethered!
Current Situation: An active trough of low pressure is rolling in from the west, accompanied by clouds and rain that seem to love Fiji just a tad too much. Meanwhile, a gentle northeast wind flow is pretending to be calm over the country.
Forecast until midnight tomorrow for Fiji: Expect moderate to fresh northeast winds trying to look cool but will soon turn northwest later today. Strong bursts of up to 55 km/hr, with gusts dancing around at 85 km/hr, are expected over the land areas of Yasawa and Mamanuca, as well as the coastal hotspots of Sanasana-Momi-Nadi-Lautoka-Ba-Tavua and Rakiraki, and the interior regions of Nadroga and Ba. Yep, time to put away those beach towels!
Moderate to rough seas will soon evolve into rough to very rough, so think twice before you attempt wave hopping today.
Most areas will enjoy cloudy spells accompanied by some extra shower action—perfect for those who enjoy dramatic weather! If you live in or around Suva, Nausori, Nasinu, or other spots mentioned, expect rain and thunderstorms later today, giving ‘spontaneous downpour’ a whole new meaning. The forecast calls for occasional showers, so if you think you can dodge them, think again!
As for tomorrow, expect the rain to make itself at home, complete with occasional thunderstorms and the potential for localized heavy falls—which may lead to flash floods in those low-lying areas. But hey, the rain is predicted to ease later, so keep your spirits up!
Outlook for Friday reveals some brief showers over southern and interior areas of larger islands. Expect fine weather elsewhere, apart from the usual suspects of afternoon or evening showers.
