Weather Update

Attention, Fiji! The skies have decided to put on quite the show this January 16, 2026, and it looks like a heavy rain extravaganza is underway! Northern and eastern parts of our island paradise are under a hefty rain warning. Fancy a shower? Because it seems the universe is ready to comply.

We’ve also got a flash flood warning that’s sweeping across the entire Fiji group. It’s an all-access pass to wetness, but do mind the muddy puddles – they just love to sneak up on you!

And the strong wind warning for our coastal buddies in Rakiraki to Tailevu North, plus Bua and its sidekicks like Labasa and Udu Point? Well, guess what? That wild wind has checked out, so feel free to step outside without holding onto your hats.

Currently, an active trough of low pressure is partying over the northern and eastern regions, bringing along its entourage of clouds and rain until Sunday. Talk about an uninvited guest!

Forecast for today: You can expect periods of rain—heavier than your ex’s baggage—with a few thunderstorms that might just steal the show. Ra, Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the surrounding islands may experience these liquid delights. Don’t forget the occasional showers elsewhere, with a hint of isolated afternoon thunderstorms and potential for heavy drizzles.

Be wary, though, as continuous local heavy falls could lead to flash flooding—especially in those low-lying areas that just can’t seem to hang on to their dignity when the rain comes down. Winds will be moderate; the seas are a bit moody, but that’s just the weather being extra dramatic!

Looking ahead to Saturday: Rain will still be putting in a solid shift, particularly over our friends in Rakiraki down to Lau. It’s the same love-hate relationship with clouds and showers across the board. If you’re in Navua, Suva, or Nausori: pack your umbrellas, because you might want to keep them close—thunderstorms will likely be taking an afternoon cameo.

Here’s what the outlook looks like for various regions:

– For Natadradave and Korovou: Expect some lovely clouds, showers, and perhaps an unexpected thunderstorm.
– For Sigatoka and the Coral Coast: Showers again with a promise of some afternoon thunder.
– Nadi, Lautoka, Ba—repeat after me: showers, thunderstorms, heavy falls – yes, very predictable!
– Yasawa/Mamanuca group will join the weather drama too, with showers making an appearance.
– In Labasa and Savusavu: Occasional rains, because who doesn’t love a good splash?
– And Taveuni, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups, buckle up for more rain with the occasional thrill of thunderstorms.

Even our pals in Rotuma aren’t getting off lightly—heavy rain is in the forecast, with winds and seas ready to stir things up.

So there you have it, Fiji! Keep the rain gear handy, huddle up with your warm drinks, and prepare for a weekend of splashes and thunderstorms. Stay safe, and don’t forget to dance in the puddles (responsibly, of course)!
