The residents of Macuata-i-wai in Vanua Levu celebrated a significant development during the festive season as they were presented with a new engine boat, made possible by funding from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. The boat was procured through the Communities Climate Adaptation Facility (C-CAF), a program managed by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM).
Under this initiative, a total of $US100,000 (approximately $F227,143) was granted directly to the community, representing a crucial investment in local adaptation efforts. Mosese Bulitavu, the Minister for Environment, emphasized how this program exemplifies effective climate finance, bringing meaningful support directly to communities already facing the challenges posed by climate change.
Former President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, expressed gratitude for the new vessel, highlighting how it revitalizes hope within the island community. He noted that improved access to transportation could incentivize young individuals to return to their roots and connect with their heritage.
Historically, the community thrived with 20 households; however, due to coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion, only two households now remain. This new support, combined with ongoing initiatives, signals a brighter future for the village, as it is not alone in this effort. Two additional communities, Narata Village in Nadroga and Vuniudrovu Village in Naitasiri, have also been identified to receive similar grants aimed at bolstering their climate resilience.
The C-CAF grant will enable these communities to enhance their freshwater systems, develop climate-resilient housing, and strengthen their livelihoods, ultimately helping them rebuild and adapt to the evolving environmental landscape. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to not only addressing immediate needs but also fostering long-term sustainability in the face of climate change.
