The Divisional Commissioner for the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, has emphasized the importance of vigilance among the public as heavy rainfall continues to impact the region. Following a briefing from the Fiji Meteorological Services regarding ongoing cloud cover and forecasted heavy rainfall, Mr. Lewaqai confirmed that emergency response teams are prepared, and early warning systems in low-lying areas are fully operational.
Although no evacuation centres have been activated and no communities have reported significant adverse effects so far, authorities are actively monitoring roads and crossings that have been affected by flooding. Recently, infrastructure damage, including the access bridge to Navala, was addressed by the Fiji Roads Authority, ensuring safe passage.
With school holidays currently in effect, Mr. Lewaqai expressed particular concern for children’s safety. He strongly urged parents to keep children away from flooded areas, advising against any swimming activities. “We have encouraged parents and community leaders to remain vigilant and prevent children and families from crossing or swimming in these dangerous waters, which may contain fallen trees presenting risks of injury or even fatality,” he stated.
The Commissioner also reminded onlookers of the need to prioritize safety over capturing moments for social media. “When seeing children in flooded areas, it’s crucial to focus on getting them to safety rather than taking photos or videos,” he added.
To ensure community safety, police are conducting foot patrols in areas deemed high-risk. The collaborative efforts between residents and authorities aim to mitigate potential hazards during this period of persistent rain.
