Police in Fiji are raising concerns about the dangers of alcohol overconsumption following a series of incidents that resulted in serious injuries and fatalities. Acting Police Commissioner Aporosa Lutunauga has urged the community to exercise caution, particularly during the festive season when alcohol consumption typically increases.

Mr. Lutunauga highlighted the urgent need for responsible drinking, noting that recent trends have shown an alarming connection between excessive alcohol intake and violent behavior. “Of particular concern during the festive operations is the overindulgence of alcohol which has resulted in serious injuries and deaths,” he stated.

The Fiji Police Force is calling on community leaders to actively address and discourage unruly behavior associated with heavy drinking. They emphasize the importance of working together to maintain safety and prevent further incidents.

Over the past weekend, several alcohol-related occurrences were reported, including a notable case in Lautoka where two men were hospitalized after allegedly being stabbed by a drunken individual. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and one of the victims has since been discharged from the hospital, while the other remains under medical care.

With the festive season approaching, this serves as a timely reminder for individuals to enjoy responsibly and take collective action to ensure community safety.
