The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has conveyed profound sorrow following the tragic loss of several women and young girls across the nation. In her heartfelt statement, the Ministry extended condolences to the families of those affected, including 16-year-old Salote Sakiti from Naqali Village, Anandi Devi from Ba, 18-year-old Venina Cirikeba Cava from Lautoka, and a woman from Veisari, Lami, who was allegedly killed by her husband.

Minister Kiran emphasized the significant impact of these losses on families and communities, underscoring the urgent need for collective responsibility in the fight against violence. “No woman or girl should have to live in fear. Family members, friends, and neighbors have a responsibility to intervene when they witness violence or suspect someone may be in danger. Early intervention can save lives,” she stated.

As the festive season approaches, the Minister urged the public to prioritize safety and encouraged anyone experiencing or witnessing violence to seek assistance from available resources. She highlighted several support services, including the Domestic Violence Toll-Free Helpline at 1560, the Child Helpline at 1325, and Empower Pacific at 5626, all of which offer trained counselors for support and guidance.

Minister Kiran called upon all Fijians to remain vigilant and supportive of one another, advocating for active opposition to violence and a united effort to protect women and girls. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones during this difficult time,” she concluded, reinforcing a message of compassion and communal responsibility.
