The Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, has shared his ambitions for a stronger and more inclusive digital future during his inaugural visit to the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF). This visit marks his first official interaction with the Authority since he took on the communications portfolio.
Minister Naivalurua underscored the essential role that the telecommunications sector plays in advancing Fiji’s digital transformation and driving economic growth. He asserted that connectivity must go beyond mere access, emphasizing the importance of delivering meaningful benefits to the lives of all Fijians.
In his address, the Minister pointed out the necessity for enhanced collaboration throughout the telecommunications sector. During the meeting, TAF Board Chair David Eyre provided a comprehensive presentation on the Authority’s mandate, highlighting responsibilities such as policy oversight, licensing, consumer protection, and enforcement. The discussion also covered TAF’s initiatives to balance its regulatory responsibilities while adapting to global trends in telecommunications, safeguarding digital sovereignty, and tackling challenges related to market concentration.
