Fiji’s Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, has announced plans for the establishment of the Office of National Security Assessments (ONSA), clarifying that this new office will not have command power over the military or police forces. In a recent interview, he emphasized that the primary function of ONSA will be as a strategic intelligence and advisory hub, aimed at enhancing coordination across existing national security agencies.

Rabuka explained that ONSA is designed to fill existing coordination gaps and address modern security challenges. The office will not duplicate the efforts of the Ministry of Defence or the Fiji Police Force but instead will work to improve situational awareness and facilitate strategic foresight. The office will provide crucial advice directly to the Prime Minister, focusing on national security issues that impact the country continuously.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of the upcoming appointment of a national security adviser who will lead the ONSA. This adviser is to be carefully selected, with an emphasis on integrity and a profound understanding of contemporary security challenges. Rabuka’s remarks aimed to alleviate public concerns regarding potential overlaps in authority and the effectiveness of existing security agencies.

This initiative is in alignment with past recommendations from the National Security and Defence Review Report, which advocated for a structured and proactive national security framework. Other similar efforts, including the creation of the National Security Strategy (NSS), reflect a broader commitment by the Fijian government to enhance national security and coordination among various security entities.

As Fiji embarks on these reforms, the outlook remains positive, suggesting that with improved collaboration, the nation can better respond to both domestic and international security challenges, fostering a safer and more resilient environment for all citizens. The measures taken represent a hopeful future, aiming to strengthen the foundations of national security in Fiji.
