Fiji is taking significant steps to enhance public safety and manage rehabilitation with the launch of its new Parole Board. The Board’s primary role will be to assess parole eligibility and facilitate the safe reintegration of inmates into society, addressing rising concerns over repeat offenders.

Justice Minister and Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga emphasized that the establishment of the Parole Board is a critical measure in finding a balance between rehabilitation efforts for offenders and the protection of the community. He expressed optimism that this system would significantly improve rehabilitation processes while simultaneously ensuring that public safety remains a top priority.

The Permanent Secretary for Justice, Selina Kuruleca, reinforced the commitment to principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness that will govern the Parole Board’s operations. The Board is chaired by Justice Jiten Singh and includes members such as Peter Schultz, Aporosa Rageci, Dr. Litia Narube, and Kameli Ratuvakalevulevuya, who recently received comprehensive training on the new parole system. This initiative draws inspiration from New Zealand’s successful parole approach, incorporating insights and collaboration with the New Zealand Department of Corrections.

Minister Turaga pointed out that the Ministry of Justice will provide essential legislative and operational support as the Board develops its protocols and procedures. The inaugural meeting of the Parole Board, which included engagements with Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva and senior officers from the Fiji Corrections Service, marked a collaborative effort in tackling the issues related to incarceration and rehabilitation.

Ultimately, the Parole Board aims to diminish repeat offending rates, safeguard communities, and maintain a fair and accountable framework for managing parole within Fiji’s justice system. This initiative symbolizes a hopeful commitment by the Fijian government to promote safer communities through effective rehabilitation strategies.
